One of our favorite suggestions for using gemstone chips in gemstone décor is to add them to a crystal or glass plate, bowl, vase, or other container. You can layer them or use them to surround figurines or other display pieces, too. With all of the colors and variation available in gemstone chips, there is almost always a complementary or accent color that will suit your personal style, Southwestern or otherwise.
About Mookaite “Jasper”
Why is jasper in quotes above? It’s complicated. Quoted from mindat.org:
“The term ‘Mookaite’ is an unofficial, locally coined name for a silicified porcelanite which forms in the weathering profile of a geological formation known as Windalia Radiolarite (WR), a Lower Cretaceous sedimentary unit that outcrops over much of the Carnarvon Basin in Western Australia.
Mookaite is variously, and incorrectly, described as chert, opalite, chalcedony or combinations of the three.
See also pink opal.
From a strictly geological perspective however, Mookaite is best defined as a silicified type of Radiolarite whose silification is opaline to chalcedonic.”
