One of our favorite suggestions for using gemstone chips in gemstone décor is to add them to a crystal or glass plate, bowl, vase, or other container. You can layer them or use them to surround figurines or other display pieces, too. Cordierite Chips: What is this Mineral?

Cordierite is one misunderstood gemstone. It is a silicate mineral that forms aluminosilicates of iron and magnesium. Many often refer to to it as iolite. That is incorrect. Iolite is a variety of cordierite, though.

Others consider it to be iolite with sunstone combined. This is also false. However, sunstone is from a few different feldspar subgroups such as microcline and oligoclase (and others). Of those, microcline does form an as an aluminosilicate. The difference is that sunstone forms an aluminosilicate of potassium. Feldspars, in general, are silicate minerals. So, it is definitely easy to get confused.
