What is a Phantom Crystal?
In some crystal formations, inside there are lines that are in a very specific crystal shape. In others, there is another crystal inside that appears to be colored in. In any case, these are incomplete crystal formations that have occurred inside of another crystal formation. They are quite the treat!
Phantom crystals are a fascinating type of crystal formation characterized by the presence of ghost-like, shadowy outlines of previous crystal growth stages within a larger crystal. These phantoms are caused by interruptions in the crystal’s growth process, where a layer of mineral deposits temporarily halts growth before being covered by another layer. This creates a visible “phantom” outline within the crystal, showcasing the crystal’s growth history. Phantom crystals can occur in various types of minerals, such as quartz, amethyst, and fluorite, and are highly sought after by collectors for their unique and mesmerizing appearance.
Our Raw Smoky Citrine & “The Great Citrine Controversy”
Citrine and amethyst and smoky quartz are all forms of quartz that form under very similar conditions. The difference between citrine and amethyst is the degree of heat applied during natural formation. If it’s too cool, you get amethyst. If it gets to a certain degree, citrine is formed. Smoky quartz is formed when irradiation happens naturally.
What does this mean for consumers? It means, because we have technology that can irradiate or heat stones, there are fakes out there (if you consider fakes to be a stone altered through an technological means). There are also forms of quartz that are completely synthetic and very colorful. Sometimes the yellower version of these synthetic quartz stones are passed off as citrine.
