Like many stones, this type of fluorite is often given a trade name based on its crystal growth habit. The most common trade name right now QR code fluorite, but cubic is still used in many cases.

This cubic green fluorite specimen is a WYSIWYG.

For those who are unfamiliar with WYSIWYG, it means: What You See Is What You Get. Pieces identified as WYSIWYGs are not a random pull of stones that are similar to the one(s) pictured. Instead, you receive the actual piece that is pictured.

A Bit About the Crystal Structure of Fluorite

Cuboid crystal growth in fluorite specimens is a common and distinctive feature that occurs due to the crystal structure of fluorite. Fluorite, a mineral composed of calcium and fluorine, typically forms in cubic or octahedral crystal shapes. When conditions during formation allow for uninterrupted growth, fluorite crystals can develop into well-defined cuboid shapes with flat, square faces and sharp edges. This cuboid growth pattern is often seen in fluorite specimens from various locations worldwide, showcasing the mineral’s unique crystalline structure and the influence of environmental factors on crystal growth. The presence of cuboid fluorite crystals adds to the aesthetic appeal and collectability of these specimens.

A Note About the UV Reactivity of Fluorite

Fluorite is known for its fluorescence, but not all colors of fluorite exhibit this property. Generally, blue or blue-green fluorite tends to fluoresce under ultraviolet (UV) light, emitting a blue or violet glow. Some purple or pink fluorite specimens may also fluoresce, typically emitting a pink or red glow. On the other hand, yellow, green, or clear fluorite colors are less likely to fluoresce or may not fluoresce at all. The presence of certain trace elements or impurities in the fluorite crystal structure can influence its fluorescence properties, leading to variations in fluorescence among different colors of fluorite. Please Note:

  1. Sizes and weights are approximate. Dimension sizes can vary based on the way the rock is formed. We hand measure our pieces on the longest side. Please see the pictures in the listing.
  2. The colors may vary due to monitor and lighting differences. We take our own product photos at this time. We are experimenting with lighting as we go.
  3. Please use your own judgment when allowing children to handle.
  4. Not suggested for use in animal habitats or fish tanks.
  5. UV Notes: For gemstones, 365nm is the best for UV lighting. Only some specimens illuminate under the other part of this spectrum (370-400nm). This is why some pictures are not as clear for our UV reactive pieces. Our current lights are at 395nm. For home use, the 395nm is less expensive, but in some cases, will need a zoomed beam on the flashlight style UV lights. If you do use a 365nm light, please take care to use eye protection.
