A Bit About Calcite Clusters & UV Reactivity

When calcite crystals form into clusters, they can create stunning and intricate formations known as “calcite clusters.” These clusters are typically composed of multiple individual calcite crystals that have grown together in close proximity. Calcite clusters can vary in size, shape, and color, depending on the specific conditions under which they formed. The crystals in a calcite cluster may exhibit a wide range of shapes, including rhombohedral, scalenohedral, and prismatic forms. The cluster formation of calcite can result in beautiful and unique specimens that are highly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts for their aesthetic appeal and natural beauty.

Clear and white calcites are not always UV reactive. While some varieties of calcite may exhibit UV fluorescence, not all clear or white calcite specimens will glow under ultraviolet light. The UV reactivity of calcite is typically dependent on the presence of specific trace elements or impurities in the crystal structure. Therefore, it is possible to find clear calcite specimens that do not display UV fluorescence. It is important to note that the UV reactivity of calcite can vary depending on the specific geological conditions in which the mineral formed, so not all clear calcite will exhibit this property.

This calcite drusy specimen is a WYSIWYG.

For those who are unfamiliar with WYSIWYG, it means: What You See Is What You Get. Pieces identified as WYSIWYGs are not a random pull of stones that are similar to the one(s) pictured. Instead, you receive the actual piece that is pictured.

If you like this specimen, you will love this cluster.

Please Note:

  1. Sizes and weights are approximate. Dimension sizes can vary based on the way the rock is formed. We hand measure our pieces on the longest side. Please see the pictures in the listing.
  2. The colors may vary due to monitor and lighting differences.
  3. Please use your own judgment when allowing children to handle.
  4. Not suggested for use in animal habitats or fish tanks.
  5. UV Notes: For gemstones, 365nm is the best for UV lighting. Only some specimens illuminate under the other part of this spectrum (370-400nm). This is why some pictures are not as clear for our UV reactive pieces. Our current lights are at 395nm. For home use, the 395nm is less expensive, but in some cases, will need a zoomed beam on the flashlight style UV lights. If you do use a 365nm light, please take care to use eye protection.
