An amethyst stalactite is a unique formation in which amethyst crystals grow over tube agate in very specific conditions. While not a true stalactite, the trade name arises from the shape which is often associated with stalactites.

What is an Amethyst Stalactite?

Amethyst stalactites are not formed in the same way as those found in caves. In caves, stalactites are formed by mineral-rich water dripping from the ceiling and leaving behind deposits of minerals over time. Amethyst stalactites, on the other hand, are formed in geodes or hollow cavities within rocks. The amethyst crystals grow inward from the walls of the cavity, creating the unique stalactite formations. Some specimens are called stalactite amethyst because of their similar appearance to cave formations, even though they are formed through a different process.
