One of our favorite suggestions for using raw gemstone in gemstone décor is to add them to a crystal or glass plate, bowl, vase, or other container. You can layer them or use them to surround figurines or other display pieces, too. With all of the colors and variation available in gemstone chips, there is almost always a complementary or accent color that will suit your personal style, Southwestern or otherwise.
With these raw septarian pieces, we have one other fun décor idea—crystal grids. You may have heard of them before, but outside of the realm of décor. We encourage you get creative with your gemstones. Crystal grids are a great way to do that and raw pieces are great for the centerpiece. You can make impressive displays filled with color and wonder. Try it out and let us know what you think!
What is Septarian?
The definition from mindat.org says:
“Said of the irregular polygonal pattern of internal cracks developed in septaria (singular septarium), closely resembling the desiccation structure of mud cracks; also said of the epigenetic mineral deposits that may occur as fillings of these cracks.
Ref: AGI” (https://www.mindat.org/glossary/septarian)
Septarian pieces are geological concretions that form in sedimentary rock. They are often made of calcite, aragonite, siderite, limestone and/or others. Septarian is not a true gemstone unto itself. Septarian is redirected to septarium on mindat.org. Interestingly, there are a few names for septarian that we’ve never heard and they include beetle stone and turtle stone along with the more common septarian nodule and septarian concretion. Please Note:
- Not all lots are shown in pictures.
- Raw stones are often dusty. For some, the color is best seen when they are wet.
- Sizes and weights are approximate. Dimension sizes can vary based on the way the rock is formed. We hand measure our pieces on the longest side. Please see the pictures in the listing.
- The colors may vary due to monitor and lighting differences.
- Please use your own judgment when allowing children to handle.
- Not suggested for use in animal habitats or fish tanks.
- UV Notes: For gemstones, 365nm is the best for UV lighting. Only some specimens illuminate under the other part of this spectrum (370-400nm). This is why some pictures are not as clear for our UV reactive pieces. Our current lights are at 395nm. For home use, the 395nm is less expensive, but in some cases, will need a zoomed beam on the flashlight style UV lights. If you do use a 365nm light, please take care to use eye protection.
