Diving Into Aquamarine
Aquamarine is a variety of the mineral beryl, known for its blue to greenish-blue color. Its chemical composition is composed of beryllium aluminum cyclosilicate, with the formula Be3Al2(SiO3)6. Aquamarine typically forms in hexagonal crystals and can be found in granite pegmatites, as well as in metamorphic rocks. Within the beryl family, aquamarine is classified as a variety alongside other gemstones like emerald and morganite. Other beryl varieties include heliodor (yellow), goshenite (colorless), and red beryl (red). Aquamarine’s growth habits are influenced by factors like temperature, pressure, and mineral composition in its environment, leading to its unique crystal structure and coloration. Since aquamarine is a variety of the mineral beryl, it has a hexagonal crystal structure. This means that its crystals have six-sided prisms with flat, basal faces. The structure of aquamarine gives it its characteristic color and transparency.
