About Jasper and Confusion with Trade Names
Did you know that jasper is not considered an approved mineral species? From mindat.org (https://www.mindat.org/min-2082.html):
“Historically the name has long been used for an opaque to slightly translucent, generally red or brown to variably coloured, impure chalcedony or microcrystalline chert, usually containing abundant fine inclusions of hematite, iron hydroxides and other minerals. It is typically associated with banded iron formations. It has also been used informally by lapidarists for many other opaque lapidary materials, including some igneous and sedimentary rocks.”
So, if you’re like the many people out there who have trouble with jasper names, you’re not alone. Trade names are king where jasper is concerned. With all rocks, minerals, gemstones, etc., what is most important is how much you enjoy the piece. If it makes your heart sing, does it really matter which form it is? If is important to learn about the authenticity, there are many scientific ways to test the chemical composition of a stone. However, they might not be easily accessible or cost effective.
If you love these slabs, you’ll also love these vases.
