One of our favorite suggestions for using gemstone tumbles in gemstone décor is to add them to a crystal or glass plate, bowl, vase, or other container. You can layer them or use them to surround figurines or other display pieces, too. With all of the colors and variation available in gemstone chips, there is almost always a complementary or accent color that will suit your personal style, Southwestern or otherwise.

“Glassy, fresh igneous rocks with a high silica content and conchoidal fracture.
The earliest manufactured mirrors were pieces of polished obsidian.

Volcanic glass – a rock rather than a mineral, it is a mixture of cryptocrystalline grains of silica minerals in a glass-like suspension, a super-cooled liquid. Obsidian is formed in the latest stage of volcanic eruptions, the silica left over after most of the other elements and water have been used up are ejected or flow out and rapidly chilled at surface temperatures.

Some varieties resemble tektites and are therefore considered as “pseudotektites”.

What Causes the “Snowflakes” in Snowflake Obsidian?

Cristobalite is the mineral that makes the “snowflakes”. It is a polymorph or quartz, among other things. Cristobalite can also be found in certain types of opal.
