About Black Tourmaline, AKA Schorl
Black tourmaline, also known as schorl, is a mineral belonging to the tourmaline group. Its chemical composition is complex, typically consisting of a combination of sodium, lithium, aluminum, boron, and silicon, with the general formula (Na,Li)(Fe,Al)3Al6(BO3)3Si6O18(OH)4. Black tourmaline is indeed a true tourmaline, characterized by its dark black coloration. It is formed in metamorphic and igneous environments, often in association with granitic rocks. Black tourmaline is commonly found in regions with granitic intrusions, such as Brazil, Madagascar, Sri Lanka, and the United States. Mining operations extract black tourmaline from these locations, where it is then processed and used in various applications, including jewelry, industrial uses, and as a mineral specimen.
