More About the Similarities & Differences of Common Gypsum Varieties

Gypsum, satin spar, and selenite are all varieties of the gypsum supergroup, sharing similar chemical compositions but differing in their physical characteristics. Gypsum is a soft sulfate mineral composed of calcium sulfate dihydrate. Selenite is a transparent and colorless form of gypsum, known for its glassy appearance and striated crystal structure. Satin spar is a fibrous variety of gypsum that exhibits a silky sheen and fibrous texture. While all three forms of gypsum are composed of the same mineral, their distinct appearances and textures result from variations in crystal structure and formation conditions. Despite their differences, gypsum, satin spar, and selenite share common properties such as being relatively soft (Mohs hardness of 2), having a pearly to vitreous luster, and being commonly used in construction and art such as gemstone carvings.
