About Grape Agate (Purple Chalcedony)

Grape agate, also known as botryoidal (purple) chalcedony or grape chalcedony, is a unique variety of chalcedony (variety of quartz) that forms in rounded, grape-like nodules. It is composed of silicon dioxide (SiO2) and typically exhibits a purple color, although it can also be found in shades of green, white, and blue. Grape agate is primarily mined in Indonesia, specifically in the West Java region where it is found in volcanic rock formations. The formation of grape-like nodules in purple chalcedony occurs through a process called botryoidal growth, where layers of chalcedony accumulate around a central core, resulting in the distinctive clustered appearance resembling grapes.
