Fluorite Quick Facts:

  1. Fluorite, also known as calcium fluoride, is a mineral composed of calcium and fluorine (CaF2).
  2. Fluorite is commonly found in a wide range of colors, including purple, green, blue, yellow, and colorless. The color variation is due to different impurities present in the crystal lattice.
  3. Fluorite has a hardness of 4 on the Mohs scale, making it relatively soft compared to other minerals.
  4. Fluorite is fluorescent under ultraviolet light, emitting a bright glow in various colors depending on the impurities present.
  5. Fluorite is often used in the production of hydrofluoric acid, which is used in various industrial processes, including the production of aluminum and fluorocarbons.
  6. In geological terms, fluorite is commonly found in hydrothermal veins, where it forms as a result of hot, mineral-rich fluids circulating through cracks in rocks.
  7. Some fluorite deposits are associated with lead, zinc, and silver ores, and fluorite is often considered a valuable byproduct in mining operations.
  8. The word “fluorescence” is actually derived from the mineral fluorite, as it was one of the first fluorescent minerals to be studied.

What is sagenite?

As is common in the mineral realm, this name is not a separate chemical compound unto itself. The name was initially given for rutile inclusions. However, these inclusions can actually be from rutile, tourmaline, goethite, stibnite, asbestos, actinolite, hornblende, epidote, and others. The inclusions are based on an acicular crystal growth habit. This means needle-like or like a net. Isn’t that interesting?

A Note About the UV Reactivity of Fluorite

Fluorite is known for its fluorescence, but not all colors of fluorite exhibit this property. Generally, blue or blue-green fluorite tends to fluoresce under ultraviolet (UV) light, emitting a blue or violet glow. Some purple or pink fluorite specimens may also fluoresce, typically emitting a pink or red glow. On the other hand, yellow, green, or clear fluorite colors are less likely to fluoresce or may not fluoresce at all. The presence of certain trace elements or impurities in the fluorite crystal structure can influence its fluorescence properties, leading to variations in fluorescence among different colors of fluorite.

Sagenitic fluorite may exhibit fluorescence under ultraviolet (UV) light. The presence of these inclusions can sometimes cause sagenitic fluorite to fluoresce in various colors, depending on the specific minerals present in the needles. However, not all sagenitic fluorite specimens will fluoresce, as it depends on the composition and concentration of the inclusions within the fluorite crystal.

This sagenite fluorite tower is a WYSIWYG.

For those who are unfamiliar with WYSIWYG, it means: What You See Is What You Get. Pieces identified as WYSIWYGs are not a random pull of stones that are similar to the one(s) pictured. Instead, you receive the actual piece that is pictured.
