About Jaspers
Jasper is not an approved mineral species. For each type of “jasper” there is information out there that can help you with classification.
This is the definition of jasper as per mindat.org (https://www.mindat.org/min-2082.html):
“Historically the name has long been used for an opaque to slightly translucent, generally red or brown to variably coloured, impure chalcedony or microcrystalline chert, usually containing abundant fine inclusions of hematite, iron hydroxides and other minerals. It is typically associated with banded iron formations.
It has also been used informally by lapidarists for many other opaque lapidary materials, including some igneous and sedimentary rocks.”
About Red Jasper
The chemical composition of red jasper is primarily made up of silicon dioxide (SiO2). Red jasper is a type of chalcedony, a form of microcrystalline quartz. It may also contain varying amounts of other minerals such as iron oxide, hematite, and clay minerals, which contribute to its distinctive red coloration. These impurities give red jasper its characteristic hues ranging from deep red to reddish-brown.
