A Bit About Yooperlite

Yooperlite is a fluorescent syenite rock found in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, specifically in the Lake Superior region. You can also find it in other regions of the world as well. Its chemical composition includes sodalite, anorthoclase feldspar, and sometimes amphibole. Classified under sodalite-syenite, yooperlite exhibits a unique fluorescent response under UV light due to the presence of fluorescent minerals like sodalite. This phenomenon makes yooperlite a fascinating and visually striking choice for gemstone décor, especially when carved into gargoyles or other decorative pieces. Gargoyles as Protectors

Gargoyles have been significant in various cultures, especially medieval European cultures, as protectors, often found on buildings like cathedrals to ward off evil. In medieval times, gargoyles were believed to protect the structures they adorned from harm and bring good luck to those within. In modern times, gargoyles are still seen as symbols of protection and guardianship, representing strength and vigilance in many cultures. Bring an adorable protector home today!

Please Note:

  1. Sizes and weights are approximate. Dimension sizes can vary based on the way the rock is formed. We hand measure our pieces on the longest side. Please see the pictures in the listing.
  2. The colors may vary due to monitor and lighting differences.
  3. Please use your own judgment when allowing children to handle.
  4. Not suggested for use in animal habitats or fish tanks.
  5. UV Notes: For gemstones, 365nm is the best for UV lighting. Only some specimens illuminate under the other part of this spectrum (370-400nm). This is why some pictures are not as clear for our UV reactive pieces. Our current lights are at 395nm. For home use, the 395nm is less expensive, but in some cases, will need a zoomed beam on the flashlight style UV lights. If you do use a 365nm light, please take care to use eye protection.
