Lean About Turquoise
Turquoise is a copper aluminum phosphate with the chemical formula CuAl6(PO4)4(OH)8·4H2O. Its color ranges from sky blue to green, depending on the amount of copper and iron present. It belongs to the turquoise group. Other members of this group include the chalcosiderite-turquoise series, the planerite-turquoise series, and faustite.
Turquoise is a secondary mineral, forming through the weathering of copper-bearing rocks. It’s often found in arid climates, where it fills veins and cavities in volcanic or sedimentary rocks.
Historically significant sources of turquoise include Iran, Egypt, Tibet, and the American Southwest. Today, major mining locations include Iran, China, the United States (primarily in Nevada, Arizona, and New Mexico), and parts of Africa and South America.
