Rhodonite or Rhodochrosite?

Rhodonite is part of the rhodonite group and often contains minor magnesium and iron. It is a manganese silicate mineral known for its pink to red coloration with black manganese oxide veining. It has a hardness of 5.5-6.5 on the Mohs scale and is commonly used in jewelry and ornamental carvings. Rhodonite is found in countries like Russia, Australia, Brazil, and the United States.

Did you know that they are always finding new and unique chemical compositions of gemstones? Rhodonite has recently been found in a manganese-dominant form that has lighter fuchsia-colored pinks and reds. This new type has been named vittinkiite. Learn more about vittinkiite here.

However, rhodochrosite is a member of the calcite group. Rhodochrosite is a manganese carbonate mineral known for its pink to red color, often with banding or swirling patterns. It has a hardness of 3.5-4 on the Mohs scale and is used in jewelry and ornamental objects. Rhodochrosite is found in locations like Argentina, Peru, South Africa, and the United States. As you can see, they both have manganese which accounts for the similarity in coloration.
