A Bit About Moss Agate
Moss agate is a type of chalcedony that forms in sedimentary environments rich in silica and mineral impurities. The distinctive green moss-like inclusions in moss agate are typically composed of minerals such as chlorite, hornblende, or other manganese or iron oxides. These inclusions create unique patterns resembling moss or ferns within the translucent chalcedony matrix. Moss agate with drusy features small sparkling crystals that coat the surface of the agate, forming a glittering effect. This drusy layer often results from the presence of mineral-rich solutions that seep into cavities or fractures in the agate, crystallizing over time to create the sparkling drusy texture.
The red found in red moss agate is generally to believed to be due to the presence of iron oxide.
