Description
What are rainbow obsidian mini spheres? Simply put, they are tiny gemstone sphere carvings. We gave it this little moniker because of its adorable marble shape. They are not regulation marble size, however. These little beauties come in a 3-piece set and are approximately 0.375-0.50″ in diameter each. Due to the natural formation, one piece has a dimple that is not a chip.
All rainbow obsidian tends to look slick black under normal lighting conditions. When lit up more directly, green, purple, and/or blue bands become apparent in better quality specimens. This colorful banding comes from a specific kind of crystallization that occurs as it is forming. The chatoyancy was difficult to get in our photos, but you can see it in a few of the pictures. Rainbow obsidian has unique colorful chatoyancy that is often referred to as cat’s eye.
A Little More About Rainbow Obsidian
Rainbow obsidian is formed when molten lava cools rapidly, creating a glassy texture. The unique colors in rainbow obsidian are caused by inclusions of hedenbergite nanoparticles within the volcanic glass. These inclusions refract light, producing the stunning rainbow effect. The crystalline structure of rainbow obsidian gives it a smooth, polished appearance that enhances its beauty and allure.
