Labradorescence: What is it Really?

Labradorescence is a unique optical phenomenon exhibited by labradorite and other feldspar minerals, where iridescent flashes of color appear when the stone is viewed from different angles. The colors seen in labradorescence can include vibrant blues, greens, yellows, oranges, pinks, and even purples. This optical effect is caused by light interference within the crystal structure of the mineral, specifically due to the presence of lamellar intergrowths called twinning planes. Lamellar intergrowths are thin, parallel layers or bands of different minerals that are intergrown within a single crystal or rock. These intergrowths can occur due to various geological processes such as cooling and crystallization, exsolution, or deformation. Lamellar intergrowths can create distinctive patterns or textures within minerals, affecting their optical properties and overall appearance. The color variations in labradorescence are created by the diffraction of light as it interacts with these twinning planes, reflecting different wavelengths of light and producing the stunning array of colors observed in labradorite.
