About Chocolate Calcite
Chocolate calcite is actually a trade name for this magnificent stone. Root beer calcite is another trade name. Is it a calcite, though? It gets murky here unless you are familiar with geology. It is brown aragonite. Aragonite is the principle member of the aragonite group. Calcite is the principle member of the calcite group. However, here is where it gets interesting: they are both polymorphs of one another.
A polymorph is a mineral that has the same chemical composition as another mineral but with a different internal crystal structure. In polymorphs, the atoms are arranged differently, typically due to variations in temperature and pressure conditions during formation.
Brown aragonite can be found in various locations around the world, including:
- Spain
- Morocco
- Peru
- Austria
- United States
It’s important to note that the specific locations and quality of brown aragonite can vary, and new sources may be discovered over time.
About Aragonite
Aragonite is a mineral with the chemical formula CaCO3, making it a polymorph of calcite. While both minerals share the same chemical composition, aragonite has a different crystal structure, resulting in distinct physical properties.
Aragonite is often found in a variety of colors, including white, gray, yellow, and brown.
It forms in various environments, such as hot springs, caves, and marine settings. Notable locations for aragonite mining include Spain, Morocco, Peru, Austria, and the United States.
