A Bit About Dalmatian Jasper
Did you know that Dalmatian Jasper is also known as Dalmatian stone? Here’s a quote from mindat.org:
“A trade name for a peralkaline rock (microgranite, aplite or rhyolite) consisting of dark spots (arfvedsonite) on a light (mostly feldspar) background. The material is often incorrectly termed as a “jasper” and the black spots are frequently misidentified as tourmaline.” (https://www.mindat.org/min-52766.html)
Peralkaline rock is a type of igneous rock that has a lower silica content and higher alkaline content compared to other types of igneous rocks. This composition results in unique mineral assemblages and characteristics, such as the presence of rare minerals like eudialyte and aegirine. Peralkaline rocks are typically found in rift zones and intraplate settings.
Arfvedsonite, a lovely mineral species, is what makes up Dalmatian jasper’s black spots. We hope to bring you some authentic arfvedsonite in the near future (other mineral are often confused for it). If you would like to learn more about arfvedsonite, click this link.
