A Bit About Common Opal
Common opal needs a bit more love in the gemstone and mining world. The adoration of precious opal comes for the opalescence, or “fire”, caused by the natural formation which has tightly packed layers of microscopic spheres of silica. In common opal, these spheres form, but not in a way that allows them to refract light in the same way. The colors of common opal come from the inclusions in the stone.
Common opal is a non-crystalline form of silica (SiO2·nH2O) that lacks the ordered structure of precious opal, as mentioned. It is typically opaque and comes in a variety of colors, often displaying a milky or pearly luster. Common opal is found in sedimentary rocks, volcanic deposits, and geothermal areas worldwide. Major mining locations include Australia, Mexico, Brazil, the United States (Nevada, Oregon), and Ethiopia. These deposits are formed through the precipitation of silica-rich solutions in cavities or fractures, creating the unique and diverse colors and patterns seen in common opal.
