Information About the Saguaro Cactus
The saguaro cactus holds significant symbolism in Arizona and the Sonoran Desert region, representing resilience, endurance, and the beauty of the desert landscape. As an iconic symbol of the American Southwest, the saguaro is often associated with strength and adaptability in harsh environments. These towering cacti can live for over 150 years and reach heights of up to 40 feet, serving as a testament to their ability to thrive in arid conditions. Scientifically, the saguaro cactus (Carnegiea gigantea) is a slow-growing, columnar cactus native to the Sonoran Desert. It plays a crucial role in the ecosystem by providing food and shelter for various desert wildlife, including birds, bats, and insects. The saguaro’s ability to store water in its accordion-like pleats allows it to survive long periods of drought, making it a symbol of resilience and adaptation in the desert environment.
Did you know that it can take up to 50-75 years for a saguaro to grow its first “arms”? Also, in Arizona, love birds live in the saguaro cacti. Check out this link to see some great pictures and learn a bit more.
These cactus carvings are WYSIWYGs.
For those who are unfamiliar with WYSIWYG, it means: What You See Is What You Get. Pieces identified as WYSIWYGs are not a random pull of stones that are similar to the one(s) pictured. Instead, you receive the actual piece that is pictured.
If you love these cactus carvings, you will love the amethyst wolf head found in one of the pictures.
A Note About the UV Reactivity of Fluorite
Fluorite is known for its fluorescence, but not all colors of fluorite exhibit this property. Generally, blue or blue-green fluorite tends to fluoresce under ultraviolet (UV) light, emitting a blue or violet glow. Some purple or pink fluorite specimens may also fluoresce, typically emitting a pink or red glow. On the other hand, yellow, green, or clear fluorite colors are less likely to fluoresce or may not fluoresce at all. The presence of certain trace elements or impurities in the fluorite crystal structure can influence its fluorescence properties, leading to variations in fluorescence among different colors of fluorite.
Please Note:
- Sizes and weights are approximate. Dimension sizes can vary based on the way the rock is formed. We hand measure our pieces on the longest side. Please see the pictures in the listing.
- The colors may vary due to monitor and lighting differences.
- Please use your own judgment when allowing children to handle.
- Not suggested for use in animal habitats or fish tanks.
- UV Notes: For gemstones, 365nm is the best for UV lighting. Only some specimens illuminate under the other part of this spectrum (370-400nm). This is why some pictures are not as clear for our UV reactive pieces. Our current lights are at 395nm. For home use, the 395nm is less expensive, but in some cases, will need a zoomed beam on the flashlight style UV lights. If you do use a 365nm light, please take care to use eye protection.
