Agate is classified as a cryptocrystalline variety of quartz, meaning its crystals are too small to be seen with the naked eye. Its crystal growth habit is typically botryoidal or concentric, forming in layers within cavities or fractures in rocks. Agate’s unique banding and color variations make it highly sought after for use in cabochons, which are polished, domed gemstones without facets. The intricate patterns and colors of agate are showcased beautifully in cabochon form, making them popular for jewelry and ornamental purposes.
